Birthday and Wedding Styling Motifs

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Chris and I love creating cakes for Children’s birthday parties. There is nothing better than seeing a little persons face light up when they see their birthday cake. Last week we were able to create two gorgeous and very different cakes for children.

Inspiration for children’s cakes can come from wide and various places - a favourite toy, a nickname and from invitations and styling of the party or event.

Chris was able to match the cake to  stationary used for the party invitation. He hand cut tiny blue and red cars, buses and trucks and stuck them around the edge of the cake.

Here are some more cakes where clients asked us to match the cakes to the invitations to create a motif for their event.

This invitation is from Tiny Prints who specialise in gorgeous invitations and stationary for children. They are based in the states, but ship to Australia. They also have an affiliate company called Wedding Paper Divas who do some really original and beautiful wedding invitations, save the date cards and place settings.

Our friends were married last year and they used the motif from their wedding invitation through out their day. The styling and invitations for the event were created by Alicia from Form Over Function

The styling of the event was really beautiful and original.

DRAGON AND PHOENIX WEDDING CAKE

Monday, May 18th, 2009

People are inspired by many things when styling their wedding. Using images and representations from your cultural heritage is a really nice way to honour your family.

One of the cakes we created this week was for a couple of Chinese heritage who chose to have a Phoenix and Dragon on their wedding cake. In Chinese Mythology these two creatures together represent matrimonial harmony and happiness.

Chris hand cut each piece of the Dragon and Phoenix from red icing and glued the pattern together on the cake. Below are the photos of the cake from all angles.

Wedding and Event Stylists

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Organising a wedding or an event can be overwhelming. Not only do you have to manage the people who will be involved in the event which is often stressful enough. You also have to coordinate suppliers, decide on themes and colours and what flavour cake to have.

A great way to de stress and unclutter your brain is to use a wedding and event stylist who can help you in creating your perfect event.

One of Sydney’s best wedding and event stylists Nightingales Wedding Designers have just launched their new Sydney salon in Ultimo. It is a stylish and elegant space dedicated to Wedding reception and ceremony styling and wedding planning.

Brides are encouraged to experiment with their table settings, relax in the lounge and view slideshows and dvd’s of recent weddings. They can discuss every detail of their wedding day with friendly staff.

Nightingales will also be hosting Wedding Workshops for Brides offering the latest tips and advice on how to style and plan their wedding the easy way and stay on budget. The workshops commence on 23rd May. Phone Kathy or Emma 02 9212 7118 to book into one of the workshops.

Below is a peak into The Nightingales Salon. The girls have a real knack with colour and patterns and amazing design flair.

If your are planning a wedding or event it is a must see.

BOLD CAKES

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Chris and I love bold cake design. We love bold, bright colours and anything that is a little out of the ordinary.

One of our favourite cake designers is Kate Sullivan of Lovin Sullivan who is based in New York.  Here are two beautiful and bold cakes that have used the seasons as inspiration. The designs are so whimsical. The summer cake reminds me of gin and tonics, the best summer drink.

What I think is really gorgeous about these cakes is how the motifs are hand painted on. When you choose a cake it is a gret idea to think about the different textures that can be used, like hand painting, icing cut outs of patterns or embossing of the icing. Using a mixed medium also creates spectacular results.

Below are two more of Kate Sullivan’s amazing cakes using bold colour palettes and motifs.

Another source of inspiration when designing cakes is fabric. We recently had a wonderful client who brought in a swatch of fabric from her wedding dress. Chris used this as inspiration for the colour and a piping design to go on top of the cake. The bride also asked us to wrap the same fabric around the base of the cake and this was the result.

This is what the bride said about the cake

“Hi Alisa and Chris,
We wanted to pass on the huge amount of praise from our guests on the beautiful looking and fabulous tasting wedding cake you created for us. It was simply unique and divine. I am so proud to see it on your website cake gallery.”
