Busy Bees

Friday, August 28th, 2009

This week we have been flat out creating cakes for photo shoots. We were thrilled to be asked to design cakes for a nautical shoot and a white shoot.

Chris and I love brainstorming on new designs and we always love to come up with something new and dynamic.

The first cake was inspired by a French sailors uniform - we loved the idea of adorning the cake with a red pom pom on the top tier, like a french sailor’s cap.

White cakes are timeless and elegant, we were inspired by some detailing on a wedding dress when coming up with these designs

Finally Happy Birthday Spencer - Chris created a Bumblebee Transformer cake for our soon to be middle child for his 3rd birthday.

We have been talking about this cake forever…

Cake Classes

Monday, August 24th, 2009

This weekend we held a Beginners Level 1 class. All the students did a marvelous job creating beautiful cakes.

I have added a few more classes in November -Please check the classes page for details

We would also love to hear if people would be interested in making novelty Christmas cakes in December. We are thinking of doing a christmas tree and a sculptured angel.

Inspiration from items of sentimental value

Friday, August 21st, 2009

When we consult with our clients on the design of their cake we like to add personal touches to make the cakes unique to them.

Recently we have made two fantastic cakes that used items of sentimental value to inspire the design.

The first cake was for Mikaela’s christening - the piece of fabric that adorns the cake was part of her Grandmother’s wedding dress and had been used to make both Mikaela’s christening gown and her mother Nicole’s christening gown.

The second cake Chris made was for Noah’s 18th birthday, his mother commissioned us to sculpt a Noah’s Ark. After doing a bit of brainstorming, she remembered that Noah’s grandfather had given him a rustic, wood carved ark as a baby and this is what we used to make the cake.

Colour Inspiration - Fuchsia, Dove Grey and White

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Earlier this week Chris and I went on a reconnaissance mission for an upcoming photo shoot.

We popped into our favourite ribbon supplier Pan Pacific who have a small hole in the wall overflowing with spools of every conceivable ribbon.

A beautiful stripped pink, grey and white grosgrain ribbon caught my eye and I thought it would make a lovely colour pallette for a wedding, baby shower or little girl’s christening. It is a really nice change from the much used pink and brown combination.

Here are some ideas inspired by the colour combo.

Weekly Cakes and Classes

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Yesterday we held our second two tier square class and we were really happy to see our students produce quite different cakes.

Our aim with our cake design classes is to teach the foundation of cake design, which is the construction or set up of cakes. I liken it to a painter preparing a canvas, if the base is not right the colours and design won’t shine.

Ineke choose a very simple design, Chris taught her how to quilt the bottom tier and she adorned the cake with a chocolate brown and white stitched grossgrain ribbon.

Ineke had previously made some sugar flowers at a workshop run by our great friend Faye Cahill who is renowned for hand made sugar flowers. Ineke was going to add these flowers to her cake when she got home.

Maria decorated her cake with bright colours for her children to enjoy.

This week Chris made a gorgeous cake for a first birthday. The birthday boy’s mum asked us to match the cake to the invitations she had purchased from poppies for grace

Chris also created a cake for a D.J ’s 40th birthday

Giving Back

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Chris and I have felt really blessed with the amount of support we have received since starting our business.

I think succeeding in business is a matter of hard work, a big dose of luck and support from others.

So we have been thrilled to be able to give back to the community by supporting others.

We have donated gift vouchers for classes and cakes to fundraisers and charity auctions.

These are the organisations we support.

Dear Alisa and Chris

I just wanted to thank you personally for your wonderful donation.   We held our auction/trivia night on Saturday night and it was a huge success, due to people like you who have made very generous and kind hearted donations.
We are now able to begin work on the Grasshoppers playground which was our aim.

Warm and kind regards
